next generation something of the art of thinking like a physicist.
Education: 1956 - 1965,
Georgia Institute of Technology, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Physics.
Summary of Qualifications: 1967 - 1998
Ballistic Research Laboratory and Army Research Laboratory, Aberdeen Proving
Ground, Maryland. Research Physicist, working in laboratory astrophysics,
in-situ stratospheric measurements of positive ions, chemical kinetics, and
(for 17 years) interior ballistics: gun muzzle flash, thermal management,
development of interior ballistic models and codes, and charge ignition
mechanisms.
Professional Experience:
Research projects in the final ten years of work for the US Army included a)
development of interior ballistic codes, b) serving on the Army/Navy panel of
experts who investigated the USS IOWA turret explosion, c) serving as the
principal investigator for modeling investigations of Unicharge/modular
artillery charge system (MACS) ignition processes, d) work with Benet and with
PM-Crusader on the thermal management of fast-firing 155-mm cannons, e)
assistance to ARDEC in modeling and understanding unusual ignition processes in
120-mm tank guns, and f) a continuing study of gun tube erosion mechanisms.
Professional Experience after
retiring from Federal service, a) short course in interior ballistics for
the firing crews at Yuma Proving Ground, AZ, 1999; b) membership on Picatinny Arsenal
(NJ) Red Team for solving problems with weapons system under development,
2000; c) study of charge
cook-off; d) study of
cannon-pressure-wave quantification using modern statistical techniques; and
e) Adjunct Professor at UNC-Asheville, teaching introductory physics in
Summers 2001-2010.
